There are already articles out there in cyber space on how to run a mystery weekend for Bed and Breakfast establishments. I won’t repeat those steps just for the sake of search engine optimization. You already know those are out there. Instead I will add to those steps to help you run a mystery weekend that is not just average, but a darn near perfect experience for you and your guests.

1) Assign characters on a first come first serve basis upon arrival. This way, you will be sure that key characters are assigned to someone who actually showed up and if there are any “no shows”, the show can still go on without the extra players.

2) Require a deposit up front at the time of reservation. This will minimize the chance of a “no show” for your weekend event. Make this deposit non refundable after a certain amount of time.

3) The most important thing to do is to make an investment in your business and buy a murder Mystery game that is specifically written for B&B mystery weekends. Look for games that are written with the B&B in mind and actually take place over a weekend. Instead of buying a generic boxed game made for home dinner parties and trying to stretch it out over a weekend, you can get something made especially for your type of business with an itinerary for the entire weekend. After all, you wouldn’t want your mystery weekend to feature a boxed game that one of your guests has attended before at a friend’s house party or purchased and hosted himself for his own dinner party would you? A good Example of a B&B Mystery Weekend game is one called The Toy Convention available at http://www.youdunitproductions.com/bb.html

4) Another way to make this weekend memorable for your guests is to offer them a prize that they will actually like. Award certificates are fine, but why not give the winner something you know he/she will enjoy like a home version of a murder mystery they can play at home? If your guests are at a mystery weekend event, then the chances of them liking a grand prize of a mystery game are pretty good. Put those boxed games to good use and give them to someone who will play it at their home over the course of a meal. There is actually a program that will allow B&B establishments to receive these boxed games for free for the purpose of giving them to guests as prizes. By visiting http://www.youdunitproductions.com/bb.html or calling 877-YOUDUNIT, you as a B&B establishment can receive these boxed games free to give away as prizes to your Mystery weekend guests. This motivates the guests and encourages participation.

5) Pictures! Take pictures of your event during game play. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. When your guest check out, give them a set of pictures to remember the event by (which will in turn help them remember their stay with you). They will look at them on their way home and show them off long after the event is over.

The above tips are sure to help you enhance the experience of your guests and help you all have a perfect Murder Mystery Weekend.

Okay. You’ve been invited to a dinner party, but it is not just a plain old typical dinner party this time. You’ve been invited to a mystery dinner party where you will play a character and try to solve a crime.

These parties are actually becoming more popular and even though you’ve never been to one, I bet you know someone who has. Don’t panic, they really are a lot of fun. Here are some tips for you to help you get the most out of your evening and have the most fun.

1) Do it! Yes! RSVP as soon as possible so your host can know that he/she can count on you to be there and play your part. Most mystery games depend on every guest to show up, so giving notice or bailing out at the last minute would not be a good idea.

2) Study your character. Trust that there are no scripts to memorize with these types of games, but it is always best to show up already knowing about your character. It also helps your confidence to know the name and basics of your character before showing up at the party.

3) Dress up! Costumes help not only you, but everyone else at the party loosen up and play along. Hosts usually take pictures and a lot of mystery game stores like mine, post these pictures on their websites for all to see, so think of your character and dress up the way you think is best. Have fun with it.

4) Be on time. This type of dinner party is not the time to show up fashionable late. Your host should give you a specific time to show up, try to at least be on time, if not be a few minutes early.

5) This is probably the most important tip of all. Remember that is the all just for fun. This evening is just a game. No one expects you to have any acting skills, no one even expects you to put on a good accent (if one is required).

6) Yes & And…what does this mean? Good improvisation requires “yes” and “and” If someone addresses you at one of these dinner parties go along with it! Play along. Run with it! Add to it! If someone comes up to you and asks you to dance, then get up and dance with them (unless the game instructs you not to), add a few moves if you’d like. YOU may not dance, but your character might. When you arrive at the party you and everyone else will be given written instructions on how to behave during the course of the evening…remember that your spouse, best friend, or family member will not behave that way tonight. Some people will be instructed to treat you in a way that you do not expect. That’s okay…remember, It’s just a game. And a pretty darn fun one too.
